About

The Baden Street Singers formed in early June 2015, when founding musical director, Lionel Pierson, seized the opportunity to enter a small mixed harmony chorus into the Young Singers in Harmony Australian National Youth Chorus Competition. This was the first time that Barbershop Harmony Australia (BHA) opened its biennial national competition to include women in its longstanding men-only competition. Within three months, the group was on the competition stage in Melbourne, where they were awarded the title of Young Singers in Harmony – National Chorus Champions.

Since then, the Baden Street Singers have lived up to their champion status in various competitions from 2016 to present. The group is active in the wider community with concerts, workshops, festivals and educational outreach programs. They have a strong culture of skill-building at both individual and ensemble levels, with a collaborative approach toward musical interpretation and leadership. They are known for the genuine and infectious performance energy – and completely unlike any group you’ve seen before.

Since early 2019, the group has been under the guidance of a new musical director, Nick Schurmann. They travelled to Hobart in 2019 for the Barbershop Harmony Festival and successfully defended their title of Mixed Chorus Champions for the fourth time in a row. They are glad to be back after a lengthy hiatus in the first half of 2020.
